It's a good setup, but looks like a terrible value in terms of bang for the buck. Buying an Alienware system practically guarantees that you're paying twice as you'd pay buying from Newegg or Tigerdirect for parts of equal or better quality/performance.
First off, the processor is a good choice if you're not going Core i7. For gaming there's not a huge benefit to quad-core cpus over similarly-clocked dual-cores but for general multitasking and movie editing, the 45nm quads are great.
It's true that spending $280 for a Q9550 instead of $290 for a Core i7 920 seems weird, but you'd need to factor in the cost of a more expensive motherboard, more expensive RAM etc... Still, for what you'd wind up paying for Alienware, you could do it!
In any case, the GTX 280 is a terrible value. Way overpriced for how it performs. Either go with a single GTX 285, or a pair of 260's. To really go high-end, buy the 295.
The main reason to go with a Q9550 system is if you're working with a limited budget. The money you save on the CPU/RAM/mobo can be put instead into better graphics.
Anyway, here's a much more powerful system built from scratch:
Single-Mode Fiber Is The Leader In Voice, Video and Data Communications
When working in the world of fiber optic network technology, an engineer is likely to encounter two distinct type of fiber optic cabling, single-mode fiber and multi-mode fiber. While there are other type/variants for fiber optic cabling, the single-mode and multi-mode are the most common types.
Single-mode fiber is traditionally used for long distances and has transmission rates up to 50 times more distance than multi-mode. This technology behind single-mode fiber uses a very powerful laser diode that can transmit infrared laser light in various wavelengths, typically within the 1300nm to 1590nm range. As the name implies, it only has one mode of transmission in contrast to multi-mode, but it is less susceptible to signal attenuation and distortion from overlapping light pulses. The core itself is small, physically measuring about 9 microns. Since the single-mode fiber has a much smaller core than multi-mode, it's small size and multi-frequency light-wave capability virtually eliminate any distortion that could result from overlapping light pulses, providing the least signal attenuation and the highest transmission speeds of any fiber cable type.
Single-mode fiber supports a higher bandwidth than multi-mode fiber, but it requires a laser diode light source with a very narrow spectral width. For efficient transmission of data, the data can be transmitted through the single-mode fiber using multiple frequencies. This is commonly referred to as Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM). Because single-mode fiber supports WDM transmission in both upstream and downstream directions simultaneously, only one cable is needed to communicate between end points.
The advantages of fiber optic cabling versus copper cabling are numerous:
SPEED and BANDWIDTH: Fiber optic networks operate at high speeds and offer bandwidth in the terabit range (Note: 1 terabit = 1,000 gigabits).
DISTANCE: The light signals traversing fiber optic cabling can be transmitted farther when compared to copper cabling. Distances 10 km or more as easily attained using single-mode fiber without needing any additional amplification. Compare this to the copper cabling used for data networks (e.g., ethernet) which has a physical limitation of 100 meters before it must be "refreshed".
RESISTANCE: Fiber optic cabling has a greater resistance to electromagnetic noise and interference, such as generated from motors, high-power equipment or other nearby cables (e.g., cross-talk).
MAINTENANCE: Fiber optic cables costs less to maintain than copper cabling.
With all of these advantages, is it any wonder that Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON) utilizes all of them to offer superior networking infrastructure technology for any organization that relies upon voice, video, and data communications.
