Can you network 2 XP SP2 PC's together via NIC cards directly.?
My sister-in-law wants to network her 2 office computer together by plugging a cable into each nic card with no router. She claims it worked before set up this way but her new PC won't let them see each other. They will only be sharing files and a printer not internet access. Any Ideas?
The cable is the same one she had orginally on the working network. I have ran the Network Wizard but the "other" computer has a bad USB and so I had to use the XP disk on it to set up the network on it. I feel like it is a setting or something somewhere. They are networked but VERY slow, the main PC has the yellow exclamanation mark on it saying its not configuered right or something. Thanks for your help.
There already is a crossover cable in place. The networked worked before she got had to replace one of the PCs
Yes using a crossover cable will allow the second pc to use the internet when the first pc is "on"/connected.
For computer to "see" each others files:
She needs to join the new pc to the workgroup, and set up file sharing in her firewall.
To share files you will need to be using the same File System like FAT or FTFS all computers the same.
To open your computer over your network for specific users to access
1. Go to START > Control Panel > Windows Firewall >
2. Select ON > then on tab EXCEPTIONS >
ALLOW file and print sharing on port 80.
3. All users should be Networked to join the same WORKGROUP with exact name spelling
Example: OURGROUPNAME
4. Then the computer(s) that want to share files
will map their drives for the other computers to access.
each computer will get a different mapped drive letter like Z, Y, X etc.
Also in MyNetwork Neighborhood you need to run the wizard, on each computer, and have each computer’s name available. After running the wizard on computer 1, you will need a source to copy the information over
such as a floppy disk, or a removable flash drive, to transfer the information to the other computers.
5. Then on each computer, in Network Neighborhood
create a folder named SHARED DOCS
and then for every file you want to share
RIGHT-click/drag/copy the file into the Shared Docs folder
OR
IF you want to share the entire drive C on the PC (NOT recommended)
or other sub folder (recommended)
right click that folder > select Sharing and Security>
share this folder
6. After file sharing is configured on both computers you should be able to access files easily.

The path I use to view files or copy them between computers is
Right Click START > left Click Explore >
scroll down to MyNetwork Neighborhood > and open the Workgroup folder >
find the mapped drive to the other computer and double click >
wait a few seconds and it will display all of the shared files on the other computer.

Fix Two Common Network Card Driver Problems
One, your PC is slowing down after installing network adapter drivers. When you finish the installation of your net card driver and restart the PC, you find the boot up is markedly slower than before. Firstly, ensure that you have set up your compatible driver properly.
Commonly, it is in gear that the startup becomes much slower than before after a single computer experiences a network configuration, for the system will detect the adapter one more time. Surely, if the system freezes up for a long time on start, you should scrutinize the machine for other failures.
Besides, if you haven't specified an IP address for your net card, your system will search one for it automatically on startup, which will take about 10 seconds. Even though your NIC is not in use at present, you'd better assign an IP address to it, and simply disable this card in the BIOS so as to boost the computer's boot up.
Network card itself is less likely to have problems. The failures usually come from its drivers or the mismatch of transmission rate between the computer and the adapter, for these you can unload the driver and then readjust the correct network adapter parameter.
Two, your net card driver is broken while cleaning virus or because of shutting down the computer improperly.
If your network adapter programs are damaged and the adapter can not work, the network is unreachable and the net card light is on, go to the Device Manager (Start / Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager) you will find a yellow exclamatory mark beside the Network adapters, which indicates that your net card driver is working irregularly, you need to unload and reinstall it.
