Do I need a new network interface card?
I have a home network with one wired computer and one wireless computer sharing the same internet connection via a Linksys wireless router. The computer with the wireless connection is able to connect to the Internet with no problem, but for the last few months the wired computer has not been able to connect if it's been sitting idle for any length of time (rebooting has always fixed the problem). Then today, the wired computer could not connect at all. Does this sound like a bad NIC or something else? All suggestions would be much appreciated.
To your question: Do I need a new network interface card?
You asked the question very intelligently and helpfully by providing enough details to eliminate much of what the problem isn't. Thanks for asking your Q. so thoughtfully! I suspect that your PC is a victim or a host of malware such as a virus or trojan or rootkit exploit because it is specific to that PC and became worse, and now that PC is not presently able to connect to the Internet but the other PC still can connect to the Internet.
You may try a test, or several tests I describe in here in detail: Give your PC a bit of a basic cleanup with Diskcleanup, eliminate unnecessary and unhelpful programs especially recently added ones that are running but unused. These sometimes are listed in Start - All Programs - Startup. Shut down your PC and then when you start it back up start it in safe mode with networking. Press the F8 key, up there just above the 7 key. Press it about every second or every two or three seconds starting right after you turn on the power for the PC. A black screen with white sentences will appear and you can select the Safe Mode with Networking choice by using the down arrow or the up arrow on the keyboard. If you have pressed the F8 key too many times some beeping might happen and you can start over by powering off the PC and powering it back on again, and pressing F8 about every 2 or 3 seconds. If Windows starts up without giving you the choice to go into Safe Mode with Networking, then you did not start pressing the F8 function key up above the line of number keys, or you did not start pressing the F8 key soon enough, so get shut down properly and then try again.
In Safe Mode with Networking, proceed by selecting Yes (and do not attempt to do a system restore to an earlier configuration yet - you are still doing some important preliminary trouble shooting right now.) Try to connect to the Internet while you are in Safe Mode with Networking. Just go to www.nasa.gov or www.mcafee.com or www.msn.com and be careful to type accurately of course. If the internet is available then you know for sure that your network card is working OK and the problem is current application software or operating system software problem(s) that prevent successful access to the Internet while in normal mode.
Disk Cleanup Go to Start Menu, Program Files, Accessories, System Tools, and select Disk Cleanup (or just press the Windowskey AND THE r key, and type cleanmgr and select OK.) This will launch Disk Cleanup. You might deselect Downloaded Program Files, if you know you really need some most or all of the downloaded programs that are now on the PC. If you want to keep downloaded programs files just de-select the removal by unchecking this item.
Select for removal all Temporary Internet Files (these are just the cached temporarily stored html and jpg and other mostly small files from recent Internet webpages visited.) Select for removal the Offline Web Pages if you have no real need or desire to specifically save these pages previously visited.) KEEP -do not delete Office Setup Files for convenience.
You likely have already deleted the Recyle bin many times, but yes you can select Recycle Bin to have it emptied in a moment. Do not delete Setup Log Files. Do Delete the Temporary Files unless you store things in that folder and really want to keep this from being cleaned out. Select WebClient, Temporary Offline, and Offline Files if you have no real need to keep each of these types of saved files. Do NOT select Compress old files as this complicates and slows things because your PC will need to de-compress any compressed files it will use and that takes a bit of processing power and a tiny bit of extra time. Probably do not Catalog Files for the Content Indexer.

So you have determined that your wired PC does not connect to the internet, and you have checked to be sure the network cable is connected to the PC and to the router or the "cable modem" that goes out to the Internet. You checked the PC in Safe Mode with Networking now and have noticed that the wired PC does not connect even in Safe Mode with Networking, (we will continue on that in a moment) or that you are able to connect to the Internet while your PC is booted into and running in Safe Mode with Networking. If your PC is able to connect to the Internet while in Safe Mode with Networking, proceed to run antivirus software - update it and then with the most current newest definition files and scanning engines go ahead and do a full system scan for viruses and trojans and other detectable problems. Consider that you may have malware or virus problems that could be a lot of work to clean up completely.
If you cannot connect to the Internet while running in safe mode it could be a hardware problem, or a hardware configuration problem, or a problem with presence of a virus or malware or a problem with the applications or the operation system settings.
Types of Network - ethernet, tokenring and arcnet
Types of Network
There are three types of networks that are commonly heard about. They are ethernet, token-ring, and ARCnet.
Ethernet - The network interface cards share a common cable. This cable structure does not need to form a structure, but must be essentially common to all cards on the network. Before a card transmits, it listens for a break in traffic. The cards have collision detection, and if the card detects a collision while trying to transmit, it will retry after some random time interval.Visit this site to get more information about network.
Token Ring - Token ring networks form a complete electrical loop, or ring. Around the ring are computers, called stations. The cards, using their built in serial numbers, negotiate to determine what card will be the master interface card. This card will create what is called a token, that will allow other cards to send data. Essentially, when a card with data to send, receives a token, it sends its data to the next station up the ring to be relayed. The master interface will then create a new token and the process begins again.
ARCnet - ARCnet networks designate a master card. The master card keeps a table of active cards, polling each one sequentially with transmit permission. The LAN server continuously circulates empty message frames on a bus. When a device wants to send a message, it inserts a "token" in an empty frame in which it also inserts the message. The scheme is very efficient when traffic increases since all devices are afforded the same opportunity to use the shared network.
