Need help getting an old computer online w/modem--question about PCMCIA card.?
I'm helping a friend's parents get an old IBM Thinkpad online, using dial-up. From what I understand, the computer doesn't even have a modem. I believe there is an error message saying they need a PCMCIA card...what is this? If I just find a cheap old modem somewhere, do you think that'll be all I need?

A PCMCIA card fits into a PCMCIA slot.
This can usually be found on its own or in pairs on the side of the laptop. It is about 1.5-2 inches wide and usually about 2.5-3 inches in depth.
You can get various PCMCIA cards, i.e. network/modem/USB2, etc.
Try looking on eBay, or digidave.co.uk, for a cheap one.
Just ensure that it is compatible with your operating system.
Drivers are usually available over the net, but you'll have to get them using another computer before starting the job, as the computer isn't on the net at the moment.
To be honest, if the computer has a serial port/USB port, that might be a better option.
