What is the difference between using a pre-installed internal modem and using a pc modem card?
I have a somewhat old Sony Vaio PCG-SR5K laptop and it has a pre-installed 56k modem in it. I've used it to get online in the past, but only on dial-up. Other than the fact that one is internal and the other operates through a pcmcia slot, is there a difference between the pre-installed modem I have and these PC Card Modems I keep hearing about? If so, what is the difference?
Also, which one of these modems could I use to get online with a cell phone and a data cable? Thanks to anyone who can help me.
Sorry. In regards to connecting with a cell phone, what I'm asking is can I use the modem that's already in the laptop to connect to the internet with a cell phone? Or would I need to use another type?
I should probably also mention that I have a standard phone jack port on the laptop and not an ethernet port.
For all practical intents and purposes they are the same. The real difference is the physical size of each and the age of the older card. You should be able to configure either to work with the cell phone and data cable. However, it would have to be a data capable of connecting to both the cell and the computer.

How to Unlock your Huawei Modem
It is so true that some Network Providers lock the Modem they sell to their Customers to prevent them using different Sim Cards other than their own, in other words, to prevent them using other Network. One of such Modem is the Huawei Modem, i have took pains to research and bring this service to you free of charge thereby making the Modem a Universal one i.e the Modem will work with any Sim Card. It involves unlocking your Modem and making workable with other Network provider Sim Cards.
How to know if your Network Providers Lock your Modem:
If you insert a different Sim in your Modem other than your Network Provider Sim, a box will likely popup requesting for an Unlock Code(this is the code to either unlock your Modem or Flash it)

Flash/Unlock Your Modem:
When you unlock your Modem, it will only be unlocked for the PC you typed the Code in. If you want to use the Modem with another PC, you will need to go through the process of unlocking it again. Whereas, if you Flash your Modem, there is no need to Unlock or Flash it when using it with another PC.
