Optical Fiber Network: Its Definition And Devices
Optical fiber network, as it is named, is a network of fiber optic cables in which data travels on ultra-thin strands of fiber at the speed of light. Nowadays, many ISPs, corporate offices, LANs and even home networks are linked through a fiber optic network. Although it's very expensive, this kind of network offers a much higher bandwidth and faster data transfer capacity.
Fiber optic technology uses fiber optic cables for telecommunications networks and Local Area Networks (LAN). The cables are made of bundles or strands of very thin fibers that provide a large bandwidth. The costs of the fiber optic cables and its installaton can be much higher compared to regular copper cables, but it is less susceptible to outer interference like electromagnetic waves.
Fiber optics also provides solutions for the enterprise networking like NAS (network attached storage) and SAN (storage area network). As a server, NAS is utilized to share data in a network, permitting more hard disk storage space to be included to a network. A NAS device can be placed anywhere in the network and doesn't need to be attached to the server directly. It can be made up of two or more NAS and can be accessed from anywhere in the LAN. On the other hand, SAN is a subnet of the shared storage devices in a LAN or a WAN. FIber optics gives more efficiency and reliability by providing more bandwidth and data capacity in a LAN or WAN in the NAS' and SAN's performances.
Fiber optic devices are used in a lot of ways like networking, storage, industrial, medical, defense, broadcasting, and telecommunications systems. Fiber optic connecters, optical testers, attenuators, optical switches, and optical routers are such devices. The fiber optic connectors are used to connect a fiber with another fiber or device. They come in different types such as SMA, FC, and SC connectors. The optical testers are designed for a variety of measurements and tests with a single meter. Then there are attenuators which are created for single mode applications, multimode applications and for attenuation settings. Optical switch is a handheld device for measurements automation and calibration sets while optical routers link twisted pair LONWORK notes to the fiber optic backbone or subnets. Due to power failure or fiber break, the latter also re-routes the data instantaneously.
In case any breakdown would result in a very large communication failure, in the fiber optic network, fiber optic cables function as the backbone when different ISPs are connected with each other. Today, a number of communication networks depend on fiber optics. In the near future, fiber optic cables will replace the traditional coaxial and Ethernet cables, in favor of fiber optics such as 1000base sx and 1000base GBIC for the LAN networking. It's never too early that you should convert to an optical fiber network for maximum efficiency and faster data transmission too.
