i have xp and have been using a bekin usb was okay for a week now the wireless icon disappear after a few minuets. and there is no light on the adaptor everything is switched on i also had a few problems installing it i had to switch from the belkin utility to windows zero con figuration some times the adaptor gives me a error code , then it seems to be working i have spent a week trying to sort this out and i about to chuck it in the bin. i have a belkin router i use with my laptop no problem. do i need to use the same make of usb as my router
desktop that i used the usb has xp and the laptop has vista which has a internal wireless adaptor that connects wireless to my belkin router no problem it is the xp computer i having problems with

I assume you tested the adapter you are having problems with on your other computer and that it works on the other computer.
All Win 98 computers USB ports are USB 1.0..All the Belkin USB adapters I have seen are USB 2.0 adapters. Some claim to work with Win 98SE.
If the WIN 98 computer is a desktop I would use a PCI-WIFI adapter instead. If it's a laptop I am amazed the laptop is still working, XP being 7-9 years old.
All the Belkin USB - WIFI adapters listed on newegg.com are not rated very well. Many of the reviewers had connection problems.

A IEEE 802.11g is rated 54Mbps. This is 4.5 times as fast as USB1.0 ; 802.11b mode is rated at 11Mbps.

Usb 3.0 Pci Adapter for Super Speed Data Transfer Rate
Once my manager asked me to transfer huge data files (up to 300GB) from the server to the external USB 2.0 hard drive, it took me hours to complete the task successfully. The reason why the data must be transferred to external disk was because the data must be copied to the mirror server in Sydney. It was in remote site where communication must be done via satellite. WAN link between remote sites to central office use satellite link with only 512 Kbps bandwidth.
Normally we use the autoloader tape backup as the central backup system for all the data servers. Autoloader tape backup solution is very advantageous for multi-server environment which reduces the overhead cost and time spent by the administrator to maintain the backup system. I didn't copy the data on the backup tape, which must be easier and faster, because the backup cartridge used in remote site was not compatible with the mirror server in the head office. So, the solution was to transfer the data to the USB 2.0 external hard disk.
The maximum data transfer rate for USB 2.0 based adapter is around 480 Mbps. Actually this is a fast enough transfer rate for home usage. But for business environments where huge data backup / data transfer tasks frequently use USB external storage for some cases, the transfer rates of up to 480 Mbps (using USB 2.0 based device) is not fast enough to support your data copy tasks. Today, you can use the Super Speed USB 3.0 for super speed data transfer rates of up to 5Gbps using USB 3.0 PCI card adapters. With USB 3.0 PCI card adapter, you can transfer your business data to the external USB 3.0 storage (such as Iomega eGo 2 TB USB 3.0 external hard drive) 10 times much faster than the speeds of USB 2.0 devices can transfer.
