Cant get online, using wireless USB adapter Realtek RTL8187B, updated drivers, router sees it, but no access?

I recently had a wireless card fail on me, as a temporary backup until the new card arrives I've tried installing a USB Wireless adapter. It's a ENCORE ENUWI-G2 IEEE 802.11b/g but after a little research I found that the better driver for it was a Realtek RTL8187B. So I downloaded and installed the most recent drivers and as far as the computer is concerned everything is working fine, the adapter is getting connection and the Netgear Router is seeing it just fine, but alas, no actual connection. Web browsers fail to establish a connection and nothing is able to update. I tinkered with the firewall for a little bit then finally took it down, still no go. The device says it has a strong connection with the router and as far as I can tell it's not disconnecting at random as it had with the software it came with, so I am at a loss. I am running XP using wireless utility. Any thoughts? I'm at a bit of a loss here.

Start----->Run-----> type CMD to get into DOS
When in DOS type:
"ipconfig /release" then press ENTER
now type "ipconfig /renew" and press ENTER again

Of course there's no " " marks and there is a s p a c e
between ipconfig and the /

If your ip address is 169.x.x.x then your adapter is not renewing its address. You'll need to reboot your computer, your router and your cable modem/dsl modem.

First unplug the modem, then unplug the router, then restart your computer. Unplug modem and router for about 10 seconds, and plug them back in (modem first, router second.) Then your computer should be ready to log back in.

Let your computer start up completely after logging in (i.e. let all of your programs start, usually takes about 30 seconds to a minute.) Then try starting your internet browser again. This should fix it....if not, post up again and we'll get to the nitty-gritty.
